Condensation on interior windows is a warning sign – take action now

While the temperature outside is bitingly cold, a warm, cosy home is the ideal source of comfort. However, if you witness condensation droplets building up on the inside of your windows, it’s time to act immediately or risk the development of problems down the line.

Everyday activities, such as cooking, breathing and showering can contribute to the development of condensation. Yet, persistent patches of indoor window condensation need to be addressed as soon as possible.

Pella Windows noted: “Think of condensation on your windows as an indicator to reduce the humidity in your home before bigger issues occur.”

While improving circulation in the home is the best way forward, cracking open a window during winter might not be appealing. Furthermore, you may feel as though you are wasting money on heating bills if you open a window.

Thankfully, opening the windows isn’t the only solution to releasing some humidity in the home – and some are completely free to do in order to prevent mould and mildew.

Many types of moulds can survive on clothing, leather, ceilings and walls, so left untouched, mildew and mould can turn into a hugemungous issue that is difficult and costly to fix – and while highly unsightly, mould can be highly toxic.

In order to prevent the development of mould in the home, it is strongly advised to turn on extractor fans when cooking and showering, Pella Windows added.

To prevent the build-up of the appropriate conditions to enable mould to thrive, it will be helpful to leave the extractor fans on for about 20 minutes after partaking in humidity-inducing activities.

Should you only notice droplets of condensation on the outside of any windows in your home, then you have nothing to be concerned about.

The natural phenomenon occurring on double glazing windows will not lead to the development of mould or mildew on the window pane.

However, if you notice condensation building up inside of double or triple-glazing windows, then you have a potentially costly problem to fix.

Condensation trapped between two window panes is indicative of faulty sealing that should not be solved at home with DIY initiative.

Instead, any type of condensation developing in between window panes means that you require window replacements by a professional.

Pella Windows recommended investing in a portable dehumidifier that extracts water from the air. They are available in all different sizes and designs, so you can find one that you like the look of the most.

By lowering the humidity in the home by using a dehumidifier, the likelihood of mildew and mould developing in your home is greatly reduced.

What is mildew and mould?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explained that mildew is a type of mouldy fungus that commonly grows in households.

Mildew typically develops on shower walls, windowsills and other areas where moisture levels are high, but that doesn’t mean it should be allowed to roam free to continue to grow.
