Common kitchen item keep roses 'looking amazing' and it also repels cats and foxes

According to gardening fans, a popular kitchen item can help to “boost” your roses and even keep cats and foxes away, as reported by The Mirror.

Using kitchen scraps in the garden can be extremely beneficial for both cutting food waste and helping the garden bloom.

Doing so can also help to keep pests away and coffee grounds are one of these magic leftovers.

Taking to the Gardening UK Facebook page, someone asked how to use coffee grounds in their garden as they got a box for free and wanted to know the best way to use it.

They posted: “The coffee shop down the road has let me collect a box of grounds. How is it best to use though?

“Do I just add a few scoops to the watering can or do I dig it in around the plant’s roots? I plan on using it for my roses, rhododendrons, and azaleas. Thank you.”

In the comments, garden lovers shared their top tips and some said it “never fails” to make their roses gorgeous.

One person shared that it also keeps away cats and rats. They noted: “I sprinkle them around the base of my roses to give them a boost, then fork it in and water.

“Found that the coffee has even worked to repel cats and rats I’ve seen entering my garden.”

Another person mentioned it “keeps slugs at bay” too, which is great because slugs eat plant leaves and can kill them, especially heading into spring.

One gardening fan added: “I just sprinkle mine over the top of the soil have done this for 15 plus years now used tea bags too, and my partner drinks a lot of ground coffee.”

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world for humans, but for cats and foxes, they absolutely detest the scent of it.

Animals simply don’t like the smell of coffee, meaning they should stay away from where it is scattered in the garden, and it doesn’t harm them in any single way.

What’s more, plants including tulips and roses can actually benefit from being fertilised with coffee grounds as they contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Gardeners should also note that coffee grounds will not be as effective if it rains, as they will dissolve into the soil and overtime, the scent will disappear.
