There’s no denying the popularity of coffee in the UK with the top drink types being the latte, followed by the Americano, flat white and the cappuccino being a popular choice too. JDE Marketing Director, Roberto de Felice said: “Coffee is absolutely central to many people’s daily routine. While the UK has historically been known as a nation of tea drinkers, Brits today drink more cups of coffee throughout the day than tea.”
A Reddit post has piqued the interest of many after one user shared the secret to making a morning coffee even more “delicious”. The post was captioned “Unpopular opinion” and added how “adding cardamom to your coffee” could change up your coffee game.
Reddit user @r/Coffee further explained: “Add either pieces or ground cardamom to your coffee while brewing.
“In Syria, people make Turkish coffee with cardamom, so I thought I’d try it using other methods.
“I tried it with bialetti (pieces) and aeropress (ground) and the results were amusing.”
To make the unusual concoction, The Travel Bite explained how “a good starting point is approximately 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of crushed cardamom per cup of coffee.
“Next, brew your coffee as you typically would, whether it’s through a drip coffee maker, a French press, moka pot, or any other method you prefer.”
This cardamom addition to your coffee is common among Turkish people and is often prepared in a cezve (Turkish coffee pot) and is a popular way to enhance the flavor of Turkish coffee.
The Redditt user added: “I guess it’s not so unpopular after all! I assumed it was because a lot of people interested in coffee like it black and a lot of people I know personally either don’t know what cardamom is or don’t like it.”
The cardamom coffee post caused quite the reaction with @spicymatzahball declaring it “delicious” and adding: “I do it at home sometimes, and a light splash of cream. Philz Coffee has a drink called Philharmonic that they add cardamom too.”
“Turkish Coffee with cardamom is great, but Berber-style coffee prepared in the same way with coriander rather than cardamom is also quite good,” added Reddit user @Amator.
With another user commenting: “People usually prefer pure coffee, and cardamom tastes quite ‘special’, so it may be unpopular.”
Unusual additions added to your coffee didn’t stop at cardamon, as one user wrote: “I added a pinch of cayenne to my Aeropress this morning – no dairy or sugar, just cayenne. Quite a lively experience!”
With another adding: “In Mexico, we use a cinnamon stick and it is called café de olla or pot coffee.”
