City named prettiest in UK with houses nearly as expensive in London | UK | Travel

While many commuter towns and cities are renowned for their lower living costs compared to London, not all fit this mould. Among them is Oxford, hailed as the ‘most aesthetic’ in the entire country – perhaps shedding light on why properties are nearly as expensive as residing in the capital itself.

Oxford, celebrated for its esteemed university, has consistently been a top pick for commuters who can afford to spend a little more on their London getaway – and it’s easy to understand why. With streets that appear to have sprung directly from a fairy tale, Oxford often feels like a picturesque embodiment of an English town, showcasing historic architecture owned by both the university and private individuals throughout the city.

The city centre is a blend of independent boutiques and high street shops, providing all the amenities you’d anticipate in such a metropolitan area, with a population currently around 160,000.

Perhaps this small-city charm lends Oxford its unique allure, particularly for those looking to escape London’s expansive streets without entirely abandoning their urban lifestyle.

If you’re seeking a respite, the Oxfordshire countryside is merely a stone’s throw away from the city, with open fields and breathtaking landscapes nestled between the Chiltern and Cotswold Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A train ride from London to Oxford takes about an hour, and return tickets to Paddington station cost around £32.

However, those contemplating a move to Oxford may be taken aback by the property prices. A cursory look at Rightmove’s data from the past year shows that the average property in Oxford goes for a whopping £598K.

In contrast, the average property price in London is £684K. So, while relocating to Oxford might save you some cash, it won’t be a substantial amount.

Ultimately, the decision will hinge on whether residing in the UK’s most picturesque city is worth the expense.

London is easily reachable from Oxford by car, with a travel time of just under one hour and 40 minutes via the M40. Alternatively, a train from Paddington Station can whisk you to Oxford in roughly 50 minutes.
