China's giant 18-storey mega-hotel that's 90 metres high and 'built underground'

Built in a 90-metre deep quarry, with 16 ot its 18 floors below the earth’s surface and two underwater, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland hotel in China has a reasonable claim for being one of 21st Century’s most striking buildings.

The development, featured in the Discovery Channel’s Megastructures series, is not just a huge feat of engineering, but is also billed by its developers as a shining example of sustainability and respect for the natural environment.

Hailing it as ”an impressive architectural achievement”, they also consider it to be a classic example of “innovative engineering and design”.

Its unique characteristics make the InterContinental, which opened six years ago, a world-famous tourist destination, attracting visitors from all corners of the globe.

With 337 rooms and suites offering spectacular views of the quarry and the natural environment, its facilities include an underwater restaurant and a spa, providing what the hotel’s owners promise to be “a luxurious and unique experience”.

Guests are able to enjoy a variety of activities, from extreme sports and dining experiences to relaxation in the spa and exploring the hotel’s unique natural environment.
