Charming European city has award winning Christmas market | Travel News | Travel

If you want to enjoy a festive getaway with Christmas markets and cosy restaurants, but you can’t stand the crowds then some destinations are off the list. For example, Paris, while charming and beautiful, had 22 million tourists last year and Vienna, another winter spot, had a whopping 19 million.

Overtourism can make for a draining holiday, especially during the festive period when all you want to do is relax. However, there is one stunning  European city that has barely any crowds – and an award-winning Christmas market to explore. Lithuania’s capital of Vilnius saw just 1.2 million tourists last year – a fraction of the numbers seen in Europe’s busiest hubs.

With the holiday season almost on our doorsteps, now is the perfect time to think about a trip to this remarkable city.

Vilnius has been named European Christmas Capital 2025 by the Christmas Cities Network, supported by the European Parliament.  There’s a dazzling Christmas tree, UNESCO–listed Old Town, and of course, markets filled with mulled wine and handmade crafts.

The holiday season in Vilnius begins on November 29 with its most anticipated tradition, the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Cathedral Square.

Every year, the tree sports a new bold design, and people flock to the city to celebrate with their loved ones.

If you want to be there for the day the lights get switched on at the market, Skyscanner currently has flights leaving from Lonodn to Vilnius starting at £42 return – arriving on the 29th of November and leaving the 1st of December.

For accommodation, prices start at £21 per night, making it the perfect budget friendly escape – just make sure you leave room in your suitcase for presents.
