Canary Islands 'hidden gem' is an 'untouched' beach 'paradise' away from tourists

The Canary Islands are a popular holiday destination thanks to their stunning beaches and year-round wonderful temperatures. The most popular islands include Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and La Palma, with millions of Britons flocking to their shores each year to soak up the sunshine.

However, if you’re looking for a peaceful escape away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas, then cast your eyes towards La Graciosa.

La Graciosa is one of the last places in Europe with no asphalted roads. It is the least explored and most peaceful and serene of the Canary Islands.

The island is located two kilometres north of Lanzarote across the Strait of El Río, and has been described by the Canary Islands tourism board as an “untouched paradise”.

The local tourism board said: “A veritable crown jewel of the Canary Islands, La Graciosa captivates visitors with its untouched beaches, rugged coastline, and laid-back atmosphere.

“As a car-free island, it offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life, where visitors can unwind amidst stunning natural scenery. Whether exploring beaches, snorkelling in crystal waters, or simply soaking up the sun, La Graciosa promises a truly idyllic escape.”

One of the reasons the island is so quiet is that there is only one way in and out. The only way to get to La Graciosa is by ferry from Lanzarote, though there are several crossings per day. The journey takes about 25 minutes, so can make for a perfect day trip if you are staying in Lanzarote.

Ferries from Lanzarote to La Graciosa depart from the port of Órzola in the north of the island and arrive in Caleta de Sebo.

However, there are no hotels, hostels or big holiday resorts on the island. The only places for tourists to stay on the island are private “apartments”, or in the specifically designated La Graciosa camping area.

The majority of these lodgings can be found in Caleta de Sebo where the ferry arrives and departs from. This is typically to help any tourists who may have missed the last ferry crossing and are stranded for the night.

You’ll also find the majority of island services in Caleta de Sebo. Of course, you can book these for a stay, but it’s worth noting that as the island is so small, the few options fill up fast.

In fact, on La Graciosa, there are approximately 750 registered inhabitants, according to Visit La Graciosa.

The island is home to a sprinkling of gorgeous beaches, but one of the top recommended is La Francesa Beach. The Canary Islands tourist board describe the beach as a “must-see” complete with fine white sand and incredible turquoise water perfect for snorkelling.
