Call The Midwife's Helen George 'confirms' Nurse Trixie Aylward's future on BBC show

Call The Midwife star Helen George, who plays Nurse Trixie Aylward in the long running BBC period drama, has taken to Instagram to tease her character’s future on the show. At the end of the last season the character was seen arranging to leave Poplar to join her husband Matthew (Olly Rix) and stepson Jonty in New York.

Recent images released by the show from the filming of this year’s festive special also seemed to imply Helen’s exit as she was nowhere to be seen. This is despite the fact that the star was believed to be staying on the show.

She now appears to have clarified her status on the programme, posting a mirror selfie to her Instagram stories, which seemingly shows her in character filming season 14, which is currently underway. She also tagged the show’s official Instagram account in the post.

In the image, the actress sports a slight smile. Trixie’s trademark blonde hair is in place, but her bouffant style has been replaced with a shorter, sleeker, platinum blonde bob haircut with a fringe.

This would make sense as Trixie has always been a dedicated follower of fashion and with the show moving into the 1970s, she would naturally change her hair to reflect the style of the era. Her outfit also indicates the ’70s setting, as she wears a dark green green roll-neck jumper with contrasting beige detailing – a fashion trend of the time.

Interestingly, she still seems to be sporting Trixie’s extremely flash engagement and wedding ring.

Although it was reported in September last year that Olly had been axed, could this update hint at a possible future for the couple?

This isn’t the first time Helen has alluded to her return to the set of the show.

Back in April, she shared behind-the-scenes footage from the beginning of shooting on her social media, showing Trixie walking down the steps of Nonnatus House in a stylish black and white coat with the caption “Series 14 awaits…”

Since Trixie’s brother Geoffrey Franklin (Christopher Harper) has been confirmed to star in the festive special, she has another good reason to return to the area.

Her comeback to Poplar was further teased by a source who, prior to the season finale, spoke to The Mirror Online.

“This series ends with the firm impression that Trixie is off to America to start a new life with her husband and young step-son.

“But the good news is her trip will be fleeting, and Helen will be back to carry on next year.”

Fans will have to wait several months to find out how Trixie makes her comeback, and if it is for good.
