Cooking experts have shared a nifty hack that can produce fresh, homemade butter in just ten minutes. If you want to save your pennies on buying shop-bought butter, the experts at Delish shared an easy-to-do recipe that you can complete at home – and you only need one ingredient.
If you have leftover double cream lying around, you don’t have to throw it out straight away. Instead, this will be all you need to make your very own butter for your toast, sandwiches or crumpets. Come armed with your double cream and a mason jar.
Delish said: “Did you know that with ten minutes and a little of heavy cream and a mason jar, you can make homemade butter.”
It’s really as simple as that. If you don’t have a mason jar, you can use a clean jam jar with a sealable lid.
Pour enough double cream into the jar to fill about half way. Make sure the lid is sealed tight, then give it a shake for ten minutes.
Delish explained that after a minute and a half of shaking, the cream should become whipped and thick. Continue to shake the jar for the full ten minutes.
After the ten minutes is up, the cream should have separated into buttermilk and butter. Strain away the buttermilk, and place the butter into a bowl.
Next, pour ice cold water over the butter. Delish said: “Mix it around until the water becomes cloudy, then drain it.”
Once the butter is clean, give it a squeeze to remove any of the excess liquid that could be hiding inside. To keep it, it is stored in a sealed container in the fridge.
The result? Delish said: “It’s the moment I’ve been waiting for to have some toast with freshly made butter. Doesn’t get better than this.”
You can also make homemade butter with a stand mixer, which can help speed up the process. It may also save some arm ache.
Homemade butter will keep for up to two weeks in a sealed container in the fridge.
