Manchester United are believed to be edging closer to securing Bryan Mbeumo as Ruben Amorim’s second signing of the summer, but the Red Devils won’t stop there after confirming the attacker’s services. They’ve already bagged Matheus Cunha, who put pen to paper on a £62.5million deal from Wolves earlier this window, with Mbeumo’s arrival set to take United’s spending north of the £100m mark.
Without the lure of Champions League football or European competition of any kind next season, attracting big-name players was expected to be a problem for United heading into the transfer window. However, it doesn’t appear to have had a major impact so far, given Mbeumo has reportedly snubbed interest from several Champions League outfits.
It’s claimed by United in Focus that the 20-time Premier League champions are closing in on a full agreement with Brentford for Mbeumo, who has attracted interest from both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. What’s more, it’s suggested that Jason Wilcox and the transfer executives are delighted by their efforts to persuade Mbeumo to choose United over clubs playing in the Champions League.
It’s believed the final fee for Mbeumo may end up close to the one United paid for Cunha, with Brentford having argued the pair are worth similar amounts. It’s unlikely to be the final time United get the credit card out this summer, as a further three additions have been mooted.
The Manchester Evening News are reporting that United are keen to add a striker to his roster, with Viktor Gyokeres having been heavily linked to an Amorim reunion. Sporting have made it clear they won’t be selling for anything less than £68m, with the Swedish international having reportedly told the Portuguese club he won’t play for them again.
It’s also reported by the outlet that a midfielder is being eyed up by United, given Christian Eriksen is set to leave on a free transfer later this month. United want to find the ideal midfield partner for Bruno Fernandes, while doubts about Manuel Ugarte’s on-the-ball ability have also emerged.
Meanwhile, Amorim is also said to want a new goalkeeper, with Andre Onana’s performances having been below par. Onana joined from Inter Milan for £47m in 2023, but his time with the Old Trafford outfit has been littered with errors, with Amorim hoping to find a more reliable shot-stopper to compete with the Cameroonian.
