Brits warned popular type of car insurance could cause ‘significant losses’ in Storm Eowyn

Drivers have been urged to choose the type of car insurance they buy carefully, with many at risk of not being covered for damage caused by Storm Eowyn.

The Met Office has issued weather warnings across various parts of the country, with winds set to reach speeds of up to 90mph in the coming days, causing many to prepare their cars for stormy conditions.

Nick Millerchip, driving expert at the campervan conversion specialist Van Junkies, warned that drivers should check the type of insurance policy they have, highlighting that third-party cover may not cover storm damage.

He explained: “With the increased insurance prices, many motorists are switching to lower-tier insurance policies to save money.

“While third-party cover might reduce premiums in the short term, it leaves drivers exposed to significant financial losses if their vehicle is damaged in a storm.”

Third-party insurance is typically the cheapest cover that a driver can get for their vehicle. It covers the driver if they have an accident involving another person’s vehicle or property.

However, this type of policy will typically not pay out if a driver makes a claim to cover the repair costs of their own vehicle, including if damage is caused by debris from bad weather.

As a result, drivers who pay a little more for comprehensive car insurance, which does cover repair bills for the customer’s vehicle, could end up spending significantly less in the long run.

Nevertheless, in the aftermath of the storm, Nick urged motorists with comprehensive car insurance that they still need to take it safe on the roads, with many refusing to pay out for drivers who make unnecessary risks.

He continued: “Driving through floodwaters despite safety warnings may be seen as risky behaviour that breaches the terms of their policy. It’s important to avoid unnecessary risks during severe weather and follow any advice provided by insurers.

“If you’re unsure about the extent of your flood coverage, it’s worth checking your insurance policy before severe weather strikes.”

No matter the type of car insurance a motorist has, Nick recommended that they take particular care when travelling during Storm Eowyn, checking a particular component to avoid losing control.

He added: “Strong winds can quickly unsettle a vehicle, particularly when passing open gaps between buildings or trees. A firm grip on the steering wheel and reduced speed are important to stay in control.

“Simple checks like making sure tyres are properly inflated and have sufficient tread depth, windscreen wipers are working well, and all lights can turn on will make a significant difference in handling heavy rain and strong winds.”
