Brits have been urged to vacuum behind their cupboards this month as more of one type of insect is expected to make appearances in homes across the country. The arrival of autumnal weather marks many changes in the UK, as leaves start to fall and temperatures start to drop. When it comes to our homes, we might notice the invasion of one frightening creature that we would rather not see. One expert has revealed some tips for keeping spiders at bay in September.
You will probably see more spiders around your home in September for a number of reasons. First, it is mating season, so male spiders will be out looking for female spiders. Additionally, temperatures are dropping outside our homes, so spiders will make their way inside to find warmth. Paul Blackhurst, head of Technical Academy at Rentokil Pest Control, has shared his advice for dealing with this.
“They will often enter our homes through gaps in doors, poorly screened windows, or even hidden inside items that are then brought indoors,” he said. “As spiders are able to squeeze themselves through tiny gaps and holes, it’s nearly impossible to completely proof your house against them, but of course, closing doors and windows will help to keep them at bay.
“Spiders are attracted to undisturbed, dark areas such as corners, behind appliances or furniture, and wall cracks. The most effective way to control them indoors is to limit their food source by reducing other insects around your home.”
To combat this, he told British households to vacuum behind their cupboards. This is because vacuuming regularly can suck up any food source or even spider eggs, and these can often be found beneath worktops and behind cupboards and sofas.
Additionally, households should fill gaps where possible to seal up entry points. Paul explains: “Where possible, fill in gaps around walls, pipework, and under doors to deter entry.
“You can also cover air vents with breathable screens, which allow airflow while preventing insects from getting inside.”
There are a number of other ways you can deter spiders from your home. At windows, where spiders might enter, you can introduce smells like lavender and peppermint, which they hate. Additionally, you can regularly remove any webs you notice, as soon as you notice them.
