British Open Thursday recap: Three-way tie at top following first round at Royal Liverpool


The final men’s golf major began Thursday as the first round of the 2023 British Open wrapped up at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, England.

The round began with 156 golfers teeing off and ended with a three-way tie for first atop the leaderboard at 5-under-par, headlined by amateur Christo Lamprecht. Joining Lamprecht is Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Emiliano Grillo of Argentina.

Most of the attention from the golf world is on Rory McIlroy, who won the British Open in 2014, the last time the tournament was played at Royal Liverpool and the last time he won a major. McIlroy finished the round even par in a tie for 32nd.

Christo Lamprecht: Louis Oosthuizen ‘helped a lot’ with score

Grouped alongside 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, amateur Christo Lamprecht was not afraid to admit he gained a ton of knowledge from his fellow South Africa native, as he is tied for the top spot on the leaderboard after one round at Royal Liverpool.
