‘British are disgusting’: Americans horrified by how often Britons wash their underwear

American podcasters have poked fun at the British after a survey revealed a surprising underwear habit among men in the UK.

The brow-raising discussion took place on the @themakeshiftproject podcast, hosted by American podcasters Brian Conforth and Zach Misischia.

“British people are disgusting,” Zach declared in the clip, which garnered 5,136 likes and upward of 1,773 comments from British and American viewers.

The podcasters highlighted several concerns regarding the approach of British men to personal care throughout the episode, particularly hygiene.

Zach explained: “Did you know that 20 percent of British men wear the same underwear for a week? They don’t change their underwear!”

These figures were confirmed by a recent study conducted by Currys, who asked 2,000 residents in the UK to disclose their washing habits.

Of all the respondents, one out of five admitted to not washing underwear throughout the entire week.

Brian noted: “That’s a crazy thing to do, I know we’re [Americans] not perfect examples, but I would like to say that we have better hygiene than that!”

Zach added: “The only reason I would wear a pair of underwear two days in a row is if I’m out and I don’t have any clean underwear.”

The podcaster highlighted other statistics that emerged from the study, suggesting 54 percent of men wash their underwear after each wear.

Furthermore, a mere five of the respondents admitted stretching their underwear to two to three weeks of wear, which Brian said elevated the issue to a “psychopath level”.

In contrast, 81 percent of women who answered changed their underwear after every wear, while only nine percent stretched a single use of underwear for a whole week.

Aside from personal care concerns, switching underwear infrequently can present health problems.

These include an accumulation of bacteria, skin infections and unpleasant odours, which may present problems to one’s personal health and social acceptance.

As a rule of thumb, hygienists recommend washing undergarments after every single use to avoid issues.
