138 sites have been added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, while 129 sites were saved in England in 2025. Many beloved structures have been added to the list, including landmarks in London, Hull and Doncaster. The annual register aims to shine a light on “the health of England’s valued historic buildings and places” and helps to grant them protection from decay, neglect or inappropriate development. Heritage England says that this is important when it comes to the pride people feel about their local area.

The structures and buildings that “need help” include the ill Garden Pergola on Hampstead Heath in London, the birthplace of vaccination, known as Dr Jenner’s Hut in the Garden of the Chantry in Gloucestershire, the Church of St Wendreda, a medieval church in Cambridgeshire and Cromford Mills in Derbyshire, known as the home of the modern factory system. “The heritage we see all around us impacts how we feel about our local places,” said Claudia Kenyatta CBE and Emma Squire CBE, Co-CEOs of Historic England.

They added: “The best way to protect our buildings is to reuse them, turning them into places of local connection and joy. The sites that have been saved and have come off the Register this year really highlight the benefits of working together in partnership, and with communities, to create positive, sustainable change. Together we can safeguard our heritage for future generations.”

Heritage Minister Baroness Twycross said: “We are determined to protect the heritage at the heart of our communities. It is fantastic to see so many historical sites saved for communities up and down the country. These are much loved places and it is great to see them being brought back in to use. This year alone our £15 million Heritage at Risk Capital Fund has been key to saving buildings like these.”

Sites saved and removed from the Heritage at Risk Register include Edwardian public toilets near Bruce Grove station in Tottenham, London; Augill Smelting Mill, a significant example of Northern England’s industrial heritage in the North Pennines National Landscape and Rockingham Kiln near Rotherham, a rare porcelain works that once produced pieces for royalty and aristocracy, including King William IV.

Historic England spent £7.4 million in grants for support and repairs to 123 sites on the Heritage at Risk Register during 2024/2025.
