Brexit bonus as winemaking costs slashed

The scrapping of EU red tape from today is set to boost winemaking by cutting costs and freeing the industry to innovate.

Sparkling wines will no longer have to use mushroom-shaped corks with foil covers.

Producers will also be free to make and sell piquette – a lower-alcohol drink made by squeezing already pressed grapes.

Environment Secretary Steve Barclay said the reforms would help the industry “become more profitable, dynamic, and sustainable”.

Last year saw the largest grape harvest with between 20 to 22 million bottles, making it the fastest-growing agricultural sector.

Last week, the Government said sparkling and still wine can be sold in pint bottles.
