Bodkin on Netflix: Father Ted's Mrs Doyle star makes unexpected cameo

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Bodkin.

Bodkin has landed on Netflix with a surprise cameo appearance from Father Ted’s very own Mrs Doyle star in the 11th hour.

True crime podcasters Gilbert (played by Will Forte), Emmy (Robyn Cara) and Dove (Siobhan Cullen) delve into the dark past of the small Irish town of Bodkin for their show.

There were a number of mysterious disappearances years ago and the more research they do on the cold case, the more clues come up on what really happened to them.

Along the way, the trio, along with resident Seamus (David Wilmot), encounter potential suspects who could know what really happened to those who went missing.

It is then in episode five, Peace In Our Time, that their digging leads to a deceptively sweet souvenir shop owner called Bronagh McArdle (Pauline McLynn).

Gilbert doesn’t believe Bronagh would be part of anything sinister upon first appearance but Seamus soon sets him straight.

He explains that she was married to “psychopath” Joe McArdle who was admittedly afraid of Bronagh as well so it was clear that she wasn’t one to be messed with.

The actress behind Bronagh in Bodkin is none other than Irish star Pauline McLynn who famously portrayed Mrs Doyle in the hit sitcom Father Ted in the 1990s.

Starring opposite Dermot Morgan and Ardal O’Hanlon, McLynn’s Mrs Doyle was the parish housekeeper who was obsessed with making copious amounts of tea.

McLynn has popped up in an abundance of popular shows and films throughout her career, following the end of Father Ted in 1998.

Some of which include French and Saunders, Shameless, EastEnders, Johnny English Strikes Again, Drop Dead Weird, The Young Offenders, Silent Witness and Last Night in Soho.

She also has another couple of projects in the pipeline, according to her IMDb page, following her stint on Bodkin.

The first is a thriller entitled Safe Harbor with Peaky Blinders’ Charlie Murphy and Game of Thrones’ Jack Glesson, which is currently in production.

The other is Man and Witch: The Dance of a Thousand Steps, a completed fantasy movie with Lost’s Michael Emerson and Back to the Future’s Christopher Lloyd.

Bodkin is created by Jez Scharf who has only worked on shorts prior to getting behind the Irish comedic thriller.

Talking about his inspiration with Tudum, he said: “My personal interest as a writer is always in absurdity, really — in the idea that life is broadly absurd.

“Things that are sad are often funny, and vice versa. I think, having spent a lot of time in Ireland, there’s a certain acceptance of that kind of tone [there].”

Bodkin is available to watch on Netflix.
