On Tuesday morning, Birmingham City Coucil leader told Sky News it is “very keen to get a resolution to the dispute”. Meanwhile, a Unite spokesperson last night told the broadcaster that there were “intensive talks but no resolution tonight”.

A Labour councillor quit the party over the bin strike and the Government’s recent wave of cuts.

Sam Forsyth, representative for the Quinton Ward, told Sky News: “I can’t stomach the fact we’re in the middle of a bin strike where this is rubbish rotting in our streets and there are rats running around.

“I’ve raised this [issue] for three years and nobody has listened. Enough is enough.”

Yesterday, Wes Streeting told Times Radio that we was concerned about the impact of the strike on public health.

“I certainly am concerned about the public health situation and the poor conditions we’re seeing for people in Birmingham”, he said.

“As the bin bags are piling up, we see rats and other vermin crawling around.”

Birmingham City Council said on Tuesday morning: “All of our waste wagons have been deployed from our three depots citywide this morning.” It apologised to residents to the ongoing inconvenience.
