Best place to store spring onions in your home and tips for growing them at your house

Spring onions are in season at the moment so there is no better time to enjoy them.

The vegetable can not only be used to put in salad and as a garnish for dishes such as stir frys but they can also be pretty cheap to buy.

But how exactly do we keep spring onions fresh for longer?

When it comes to buy them in the supermarket you want to make sure the bulb is clean and firm.

If it feels a little soft then the product isn’t so fresh. Once bought, the veg can be stored either in the fridge or the worktop it all depends how quickly you are going to the spring onion.

To ensure the veg stays fresh fill a glass high enough to cover the roots of the spring onion. A drinking glass will do. Place the spring onion in the glass to ensure the water is supporting the stalks of the veg.

You can then place the glass in the fridge or the worktop whichever you prefer. However, if you’re placing them in the fridge make sure to cover over the glass with a bag and put a rubbed band over it to make sure it stays in place.

To keep the water fresh make sure to change it every two or three day. This will help keep the spring onions for up to two to three weeks.

How to freeze them

Another method to extend their shelf life is through freezing. Although if you plan to do this method they may come out a little soggy when defrosting however, they can still be used for dishes such as soups or sauces.

In order to freeze them make sure to wash and dry the veg with a paper towel. Then cut the stalks into thirds and make sure not to cut the root.

Then place them layed across a sealed container to freeze. You can also use a freezable bag. Don’t forget to label and date the bag as they can last for up to six months.

How to regrow spring onions

Even better you can grow spring onions yourself and they’re pretty easy to do.

All you have to do is save one inch of the white end when you’re cutting the spring onion. Leave the white roots still attached to the bottom too.

Then place the ends in water. A drinking glass will work again if not a jar will do also. Make sure to leave the cut tops exposed.

Place the jar in a sunny area of the home and in a couple of days you should see them start to grow.

The only thing you have to do is change the water weekly to ensure the stalks will grow. Once grown, they will be good to eat.
