Peace lilies, recognisable by their green foliage and white-hooded flowers held high above the leaves, are known for being somewhat temperamental houseplants. However, once owners understand their needs, they become easier to care for.
Happy Houseplants, a plant retailer and blog, has shared tips on caring for peace lilies to get the most out of them.
Their care guide lists the “best room” peace lily owners should keep them in so the plant “flowers the best.”
The pros claimed that “one of the most important factors” is where you place it in your home.
They said: “A spot where the houseplant looks great but also gives the peace lily sufficient sunlight and humidity will overall, affect the plant’s health especially as houseplants do not like to be moved once they have their spot.”
Peace lilies enjoy a bright spot with plenty of indirect sunlight. This can be near east or west-facing windows but not too near these windows as draughts and radiator heat can damage the houseplant, “causing it to wilt”.
They claimed: “The best room we recommend placing your peace lily is in a bathroom/shower room.”
Aside from keeping peace lilies in a high-humidity location due to where they originate, watering regularly is also vital.
Peace lilies like to be watered regularly, whereby the soil is “constantly moist but not soggy”.
A general rule of thumb is to ensure the top couple of inches of soil has dried out before watering.
Owners need to look at the soil moisture rather than rely on a watering schedule because of numerous external factors that can impact when a peace lily needs watering.
Misting this gorgeous plant is also crucial as this houseplant “thrives off humidity”. The pros recommend misting your houseplant every other day.
With spring coming up, it is important to give the houseplants a regular feed which will “keep them healthy”.
Fertiliser gives houseplants “plenty of macronutrients such as nitrogen for growth, potassium for healthy blooms and phosphorous to promote roots”.
