Balmoral Castle to open to the public for the first time

The public will be allowed inside the interior rooms of Balmoral Castle for the first time ever, the royal estate has announced.

King Charles III’s private retreat will open its doors this summer for private tours. Named The Balmoral Experience, it will allow members of the public into previously off-limits areas of the Aberdeenshire estate.

Taking to social media to announce the tours, Balmoral Castle revealed that they will take place between July 1 and August 4. Tickets will be priced at £100, or £150 to include afternoon tea, while only 40 are available per day.

As well as being given exclusive access inside the residence, visitors will “learn about Balmoral’s history and heritage” as they journey through its interiors. The tour will include a number of rooms that are used today by their Majesty’s The King and Queen, as well as other members of the Royal Family.

Other highlights of the tour will include a collection of outfits worn by Charles and Camilla, the late Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Guests will also be guided into Balmoral’s Ballroom, where there will be a collection of the King’s watercolours on display.

Writing on its official Facebook page, Balmoral Castle said: “Since its completion in 1855, access to the interior of Balmoral Castle has been restricted to the public, until now. For the first time in history, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of interior castle private tours – The Balmoral Experience.”

“Learn about Balmoral’s history and heritage, led by our experienced guides through several of the exquisite rooms within Balmoral Castle.

“Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral Estate by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to the present day, where you can see a selection of rooms within the Castle that are used by Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family.”

Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle on September 8, 2022. The estate is said to have been a favourite destination of the late monarch, who would spend her summer holidays there.
