Arctic blast from Northern Europe could plunge UK into -11 degree Celcius temperatures

Snow blanketed parts of the country on Monday, as Arctic temperatures sparked warnings of travel and power cut chaos.

Seven Met Office snow or ice warnings are in place for Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England and Wales until Friday morning.

Experts fear the icy blast from northern Europe will plunge the mercury as low as -11C – England’s coldest temperature this winter – in Cumbria’s Pennine areas tomorrow morning.

Overnight lows of -5C are expected in southern regions.

Forecasters predict travel delays, “impassable” pavements and cycle paths, stranded rural areas and injuries from falls.

On Monday, the coldest UK temperature was -10.1C in the Cairngorms.

Aberdeen and Scarborough, in North Yorks, were covered in snow and Ross Fountain in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, froze solid. The Met Office warned last night: “Temperatures will drop below freezing overnight, as cold as -5C or more in some areas.”

Many communities in the South face a flooding risk.

The Environment Agency issued 27 warnings of expected flooding and 100 “possible” alerts last night.
