Apple is adding new fitness features to your iPhone and Watch – here's what's new

If you’ve piled on the pounds over the festive period you might be looking for ways to reduce your waistline. Right on cue, Apple has announced a huge upgrade to its heart-pumping Fitness+ service which adds a swathe of bonus features, new music and entertainment to this interactive workout and health platform.

Fitness+ is available across multiple devices including iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Apple Watch with it already offering plenty of ways to stay active, clear your mind and get stronger. However, from Monday January 7, it’s getting even more functionality with Apple adding extras including dedicated workout programmes for anyone who loves golf.

The new sessions, which are led by professional golfer Rose Zhang and long-term Apple coach Kyle Ardill, are aimed at improving strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility in the body. Fans of the 18-hole game can log in and take part in numerous Strength, Core, and Yoga classes which should then help when heading out on the course.

“To play at my best, the training that I do off the course is so important. Incorporating strength, core, and mobility workouts helps make sure my body and mind are ready,” said Zhang. “Whether people are new to the sport or want to advance their skills, I’m excited that the workouts in this program on Fitness+ will help users feel more confident in their swing and have fun on the course.”

Along with that new golf upgrade, there’s plenty more coming to Fitness+ including additional Time to Walk episodes with content coming from Today Show host Al Roker and author Lilly Singh. For those not aware, Time to Walk offers a podcast-style experience with famous faces chatting about their lives as you take your morning or afternoon stroll. This service has, until now, only been available to Fitness+ subscribers but Apple is also making 50 episodes available via its Podcast service with 10 even playable for free.

Other changes included in the upcoming Fitness+ upgrade include new Artist Spotlight series — which dedicates an entire workout playlist to a single artist. Famous faces soon to be playing on the platform include Rihanna, Britney Spears and U2 plus there will even be workouts featuring music by this year’s Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show headliner USHER.

Finally, for those that simply want some peace and quiet, there’s a brand-new meditation theme called Sound. Apple says this will offer users a new way to feel relaxed and restored with a variety of soothing tones and rhythms. Seven new Sound meditations will be available, with new meditations dropping every week across five, 10, and 20 minutes.

“Starting the new year can mean kicking off a fitness and wellbeing journey, restarting after a long break, or looking to take it up a level with a new challenge,” said Jay Blahnik, Apple’s vice president of Fitness Technologies. “From sound meditations to help you relax, to building strength for an improved golf swing or turning up the volume on your workouts, Fitness+ has something for everyone to help them stay active and support their wellbeing in the new year.”
