Angela Rayner dealt fresh blow in homes row as new document emerges

Angela Rayner is facing further scrutiny in the row over her past living situation following the disclosure of a key document signed by her former neighbour.

Sylvia Hampson, who has previously called the Labour deputy leader a “f***ing liar” for insisting that she lived apart from her then-husband, has claimed she was a legal witness to the sale of Ms Rayner’s home.

The Mail on Sunday reported that Ms Rayner asked Mrs Hampson to sign the transfer of whole registered title (TR1) document for what she claimed was her “principal property” in Vicarage Road, Stockport.

But there are questions about why she did not call on a neighbour near the house as Mrs Hampson lived about a mile away next door to Mark Rayner on Lowndes Lane, where Ms Rayner says she did not live.

Ms Hampson was interviewed by Greater Manchester Police on Friday in relation to the matter.

Police are probing the Ashton-under-Lyne MP over allegations about her living arrangements from a decade ago.

She has faced questions over whether she should have paid capital gains tax on the 2015 sale of her ex-council house and claims she may have broken electoral law by giving false information about her main residence.

Ms Rayner insists her ex-council house on Vicarage Road was her principal residence between 2007 and 2015.

She was registered at the property for five years after she married Mr Rayner in 2010, while he was listed at another address in Lowndes Lane.

But neighbours have disputed claims that the couple lived separately.

GMP initially said it would not be investigating the allegations but reassessed information and launched a probe following a complaint by Tory deputy chairman James Daly.

The Labour politician, who denies any wrongdoing, has promised to resign if she is found to have committed a crime over the accusations.

A Labour spokesman said: “Angela has been clear that she will cooperate with any investigation. We do not plan to give a running commentary.

“We remain completely confident that Angela has complied with the rules at all times and it’s now appropriate to let the police do their work.”
