American living in UK baffled by Brits having to ‘wave hands back and forth’ in bathroom

An American woman living in the UK revealed her shock at discovering a quirk of British bathrooms that forces people to “wave their hands back and forth”, as she documented some intriguing differences houses in the two countries.

Helene Sula, who moved to Oxford from Dallas, Texas, shares her observations about on TikTok as @heleneinbetween, often pointing out everything from interesting regional habits to food choices.

In a recent video, Helene sounded off about the odd arrangement of toilets in Britain, particularly the phenomenon of bogs having “double taps.”

Recording a bathroom sink in her new place, Helene turned the taps on, writing in the video, “You have to theatrically wave your hands back and forth to get the right temperature.”

It’s common in the US to find just one “faucet” that can be adjusted to let out hot and cold water when you go to wash your hands.

She was also struck the water pressure in British homes which she said is “super high” adding that she’s reminded of this fact “every time I wash the dishes and soak my shirt.”

The devices, which are common in the states but rare to find in the UK, are designed to collect and grind down food waste.

Sticking your fingers down the plug hole if you have one of these units is a definite no-no, and one Brit quipped that “I think a lot of Brits would have less fingers if we had them here.”
