All the Wetherspoons pubs that have closed this year and more to go – full list

The popular chain, which is renowned for its low prices, closed two branches earlier this month.

On Sunday, December 10, JD Wetherspoon The Coronet in Islington, London closed its doors for good.

Like many of the pub locations, this branch was set in a building that used to be a cinema and marks a sad loss for regulars who would frequent the Holloway Road site.

The chain announced in September last year that it was making a “commercial decision” to list The Coronet in Holloway Road for sale.

Now, almost one year after it first went on the market, the much-loved site has come under new ownership of David Nourani, the chief executive of DN Property London.

According to the Islington Gazette, upwards of 30 pubs in London have been sold to the property tycoon, including former Wetherspoons pub The Tollgate in Turnpike Lane.

The loss of the unique cinema-style “spoons” came one week after The Foxley Hatch in Purley closed its doors to customers.

This branch was also put on the market at the start of 2023 and is one of many JD Wetherspoons sites to have closed in a 12 month period.

Last year, the owner of the pub chain Tim Martin announced that 32 sites would be closing down after struggling with steep running costs and rising inflation.

It’s by no means the end of the Wetherspoons reign, however, as the chain has still opened a few new sites and now boasts more than 800 branches across the UK.

Previously, the nationally renowned pub chain had more than 850 locations across the country, though this was further reduced by the announcement that 10 more sites would be dropped from its expansive portfolio in 2023.

Some locations are still awaiting buyers or are close to fulfilling the lease on the property, so will remain open until they are sold or re-located.
