In a series of mysterious deaths that have raised suspicions and drawn international attention, several prominent critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin have met untimely ends in various circumstances, ranging from plane crashes to falling off balconies.

The string of deaths has left many questioning the circumstances surrounding these incidents.

The resurgence of interest in Putin’s critics come as imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny dead while serving a 19 year sentence in a penal colony in Russia.

Navalny is said to have become ill after going for a walk on Friday, before collapsing and dying shortly afterwards.

The latest victim in this disturbing pattern is Alexei Navalny, a fierce critic of Putin known for his campaigns against corruption and anti-Kremlin protests. Navalny, serving a 19-year sentence on charges of extremism, reportedly fell ill after a walk and lost consciousness in prison. Despite attempts to revive him, Navalny passed away.

The cause of death is currently “being established”, according to the Federal Penitentiary Service.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin was informed of Navalny’s death, and the prison service will investigate in line with standard procedures.

Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, expressed uncertainty about his death, awaiting confirmation from his lawyer who is en route to the prison.

Yevgeny Prigozhin

Another figure, Yevgeny Prigozhin, known as “Putin’s Chef” and an exiled Wagner Group financier, is rumoured to have died in a plane crash in Russia in August 2023 – just a year after he led an rebellion.

Prigozhin, after criticising the Kremlin and attempting a coup against Russian leadership in June 2023, faced exile to Belarus.

His whereabouts and safety had been uncertain before his death. Then, in August, a plane carrying Prigozhin and other high ranking members of the Wagner group crashed into a fireball.

The actual cause of the crash is unknown, but conspiracies have abounded over the timing of the crash and the deaths of those onboard.

Pavel Antov

Russian tycoon Pavel Antov fell from a hotel window in India in December 2022, just days after criticising Putin’s war with Ukraine.

Despite claims of a natural death following a missile attack in Kyiv, the circumstances surrounding Antov’s demise raise questions about the safety of those opposing Putin’s actions.

Antov was a well known figure in the city of Vladimir, east of Moscow and in the summer of 2022, he denied criticising Russia’s war in Ukraine after a message appeared on his WhatsApp account. The message read: “It’s extremely difficult to call all this anything but terror.”

Russian media reported that Mr Antov, 65, had fallen from a window at the hotel in the city of Rayagada.

Ravil Maganov

Lukoil chairman Ravil Maganov openly criticised Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and later died by also falling out of a window at a Moscow hospital in September 2022.

A short time after the Russia invasion of Ukraine, the Lukoil board called for the war to end, and called it a ‘tragedy’. The board also expressed its sympathy to victims. While Lukoil initially cited a “serious illness” as the cause of death, suspicions linger given Maganov’s outspoken opposition to the conflict.

However, Tass news agency quoted sources saying he had fallen out a window, and later added that he had taken his own life.

Dan Rapoport

Businessman Dan Rapoport, a vocal critic of the Russia-Ukraine war, was found dead in front of a Washington, D.C. apartment building in August 2022.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, adding to the growing list of Putin’s critics meeting mysterious fates.

Alexei Maslov

A former Russian army chief with longstanding ties to Ukraine, Alexei Maslov died “suddenly” in Moscow at the age of 69 in December 2022.

The news of his death came from the tank factory where he worked, the Uralvagonzavod machine-building company: the largest tank manufacturer in the world.

The company did not provide further explanations.

General Maslov, who was commander-in-chief of the Russian Ground Forces from 2004 to 2008, passed away on Christmas Day in a Moscow military hospital, the company said.
