Alan Titchmarsh shares his genius ‘answer’ to stop slugs and snails destroying plants

Alan Titchmarsh has shared many nifty gardening tips and tricks via his Instagram page @alantitchmarshmbe.

One that will be useful at this time of year is how to ward off slugs and snails to avoid damaged plants.

Slugs and snails are around all year round, however, they are even more active in spring when temperatures rise but wet weather continues.

Warm and wet are the ideal conditions for slugs and snails to thrive in gardens.

To keep slugs and snails away, Alan demonstrated what he does with his potted hosta plants that have not been attacked by these pests.

He captioned his video: “Pot feet and a dry spring are the answer to the question ‘Why don’t your hosta leaves have holes in them?’

“Wet springs and easy access to the emerging buds suit slugs and snails much better!”

In the video, Alan is showing his followers his hosta plant. The container plant has been raised slightly off the ground using two feet.

Alan has planted his hosta in a terracotta pot, and the plant appears to be thriving with lots of green foliage.

The gardening expert’s video received more than 3,400 likes and numerous comments from fans who loved this tip and even shared their hacks for keeping slugs and snails at bay.

@sue_heart_designs said: “Thanks for the tip, I will get some pot feet right away.”

@mullylife commented: “Genius idea. I use corks for my pots. The larger ones are on wheels. So far so good.”

@carolinesylvester wrote: “I put vaseline around the rim of the pots (reapply every week), but you must check them every week or you’ll end up with a feast.

“I also add coffee grounds to the base of the plant and I make a chilli and garlic spray to spray on the leaves.”

@emsadventures wrote: “I swear by beer traps. They’ve seriously changed my life. No more slugs.”

@carringtosharon said: “Vaseline round top of pot and they slip off and for ones in the ground, beer in a pot works great.”
