Every month, we are graced with a brand new wide selection of films being made available for free on streaming platform Freely.

This June, get ready to stream gems of all genres, including war tales, fantasy classics, sci-fi hits and mystery films.

Here are some of the best titles available to stream on Freely this month – as well as the full list of their top picks at the end:

Saving Private Ryan (BBC iPlayer)

Cast: Tom Hanks, Edward Burns,Tom Sizemore, Jeremy Davies, Vin Diesel, Adam Goldberg, Barry Pepper, Giovanni Ribisi, Matt Damon.

Strating out strong with one of the most powerful war films ever made. Steven Spielberg’s unflinching D-Day epic stars Tom Hanks as a captain sent to find and bring home a missing soldier behind enemy lines. Gritty, emotionally resonant, and packed with historical weight – it is unquestionably a favourite for fans of WWII cinema and true heroism.

Saving Private Ryan (1998) went on to win five Academy Awards (Best Director (Steven Spielberg), Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing) and several other accolades, including Golden Globes and BAFTA awards.

Top Gun: Maverick (Channel 4)

Cast: Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer.

Tom Cruise returns to the skies in this thrilling sequel of the 1986 action drama film. A blend of nostalgia and cutting-edge aerial action, this is the kind of high-adrenaline blockbuster that resonates with long-time action fans – especially those who watched the original.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022) got six Academy Award nominations (including one for Best Picture), a win for Best Sound, and recognition as one of the top-ten films of 2022 by the American Film Institute.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (Channel 4)

Cast: Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff.

Still going strong, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is back with a globe-trotting, stunt-filled adventure featuring rogue AI, espionage, and death-defying action. A modern spy thriller in the classic mould – and Cruise rides a motorbike off a mountain.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) was nominated for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, and garnered nominations and wins from organizations like the Screen Actors Guild, BAFTA, and the Chicago Film Critics Association.

Memento (Channel 4) – only until 19 June

Cast: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Mark Boone Junior, Russ Fega, Jorja Fox.

Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough thriller is a twisting, mind-bending puzzle box that rewards viewers who like to engage their brains. With noir undertones and a protagonist seeking justice, this is ideal for those who enjoy complex crime stories and psychological thrillers.

The film is built on two timelines, one coloured and one in black-and-white, and was inspired by a cross-country road trip Nolan took with his brother, screenwriter Jonathan Nolan. Memento was then written by the brothers remotely, while one was in Washington D.C and the other in Los Angeles. It was a box office success, expanding its distribution from the initial 11 theaters to over 500.

Immortals (Channel 5)

Cast: Henry Cavill, Stephen Dorff, Luke Evans, John Hurt, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz, Joseph Morgan, Freida Pinto, Daniel Sharman.

A sweeping fantasy-action epic with mythological themes and gritty swordplay. For fans of historical drama, gladiator tales, and classical heroism, this tale of gods, mortals, and war in ancient Greece offers both scale and spectacle.

Immortals (2011) was a box office success, grossing over $220 million worldwide. Critically, it got mixed reviews, praising mostly its technical production over storytelling. It was also named one of the most underrated fantasy films of the decade by film publication Screen Rant.

The Hobbit series (ITVX)

Cast: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Benedict Cumberbatch.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel trilogy to The Lord of the Rings brings Middle-earth back to the screen in grand fashion. Across An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and The Battle of the Five Armies, we follow Bilbo Baggins (Freeman) as he joins Gandalf and a band of dwarves on a perilous quest to reclaim their homeland from the dragon Smaug.

Directed by Peter Jackson, the trilogy offers high-stakes fantasy, sweeping visuals, and a deeper dive into Tolkien’s world. While often debated for its extended pacing and CGI-heavy approach compared to its predecessor trilogy, The Hobbit is a turning point of modern fantasy cinema. The films were nominated for a combined total of seven Academy Awards, mostly in technical categories, and grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide.

Roman Holiday (Channel 4) – from 25 June

Cast: Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Eddie Albert.

A timeless romantic classic starring Audrey Hepburn in her Oscar-winning role as a runaway princess who falls in love with an American reporter during a dreamy day in Rome. With its black-and-white charm, real Roman locations, and sparkling chemistry between its leads, Roman Holiday is one of the most beloved romantic comedies ever made.

Directed by William Wyler, the film earned three Academy Awards, including Best Actress, Best Story, and Best Costume Design. Hepburn’s performance made her an overnight icon, and the film’s Vespa scooter scene is still remembered as one of the most enduring images in cinema history.

Men in Black (ITVX)

Cast: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Fiorentino, Vincent D’Onofrio, Rip Torn.

A sharp and stylish sci-fi comedy that pairs Smith and Jones as secret agents policing extraterrestrial life on Earth. Blending sharp humour, inventive alien designs, and fast-paced action, Men in Black became a 1997 hit and kickstarted a long-running franchise.

It earned an Oscar for Best Makeup and was praised for its originality and chemistry between its leads. Director Barry Sonnenfeld brought a comic book tone with enough heart and wit to make it stand out in a summer of blockbusters.

Gregory Peck

Wuthering Heights (Channel 4) – from 18 June

Cast: Tom Hardy, Charlotte Riley, Sarah Lancashire, Burn Gorman, Rosalind Halstead.

This 2009 TV adaptation of Emily Brontë’s brooding gothic romance stars Tom Hardy as the tormented Heathcliff and Charlotte Riley as the wild Cathy. Set on the windswept Yorkshire moors, the two-part series leans into the darkness of the original novel, capturing its raw emotional intensity and themes of obsession, revenge, and doomed love.

Critics praised Hardy’s commanding performance and the BBC’s lavish production. A haunting take on a literary classic, perfect for fans of period drama with a darker edge.

Ghost (ITVX)

Cast: Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn.

A tearjerking supernatural romance that became one of the biggest hits of the early ’90s. After banker Sam (Swayze) is murdered, he tries to contact his partner Molly (Moore) from beyond the grave, enlisting the help of a psychic (Goldberg, in her Oscar-winning role).

Famous for its pottery scene and moving soundtrack (‘Unchained Melody’), Ghost blends romance, comedy, suspense, and fantasy. It won two Academy Awards (Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay) and remains a perennial favourite for fans of heartfelt, high-concept love stories.
