New £79 headphones have battery life and specs to embarrass Sony and Bose

If you want a pair of noise cancelling over-ear headphones but black at the prices companies such as Apple, Bose or Sony can charge, there is a new pair for sale that could fit the bill for less than £100.

The CMF Headphones Pro from UK-based tech firm Nothing have just been released, and they boast specs that punch above their £79 price point.

CMF is Nothing’s sub-brand that offers impressive gadgets for much less than you’d expect. CMF stands for “colour, material, finish”.

Living up to the meaning of the CMF name, the distinctive budget headphones have a rounded design and are available in light green, white or black. They have circular ear cups with removable ear cushions you can swap out for different colours, a simple headband for universal fit and a roller button that can control volume, play/pause and active noise cancellation (ANC).

That’s right – these headphones have ANC for £79, so you should be able to rely on them to block out external noise when all you want to hear are your tunes.

“Along with this comes for the very first time an Energy Slider which helps you switch between varying levels of Bass and Treble that can be adjusted based on the energy of the song that you’re listening to,” CMF said in a press release.

So far, so trendy.

“These along with a customisable Button makes the CMF Headphone Pro a truly unique visual and tactile experience.”

The sound is delivered through 40mm custom drivers that the firm says have nickel plated diaphragms “for reduced distortion and sharper clarity”. You can even tune the headphones using a companion app to have a personal sound profile so you can get your music honed just to your tastes.

Even more impressively, CMF is claiming the Headphones Pro have up to 100 hours of battery life on a charge, a mammoth figure. Even plugging in the USB-C cable for five minutes should give you enough charge for four hours of playback. Sony’s WH-1000XM6 can only slug it out for 30 hours, and they cost £399.

If that weren’t enough, you even get LDAC + Hi-Res Certified Audio playback for the price, with high fidelity Bluetooth audio up to 990 kbps, if you have a phone and streaming service that supports Hi-Res.

It’s all very impressive considering the Nothing Headphone 1 from earlier in the year cost £299, while Bose’s latest QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Gen 2 are £450.

The CMF Headphone Pro is available now from Nothing’s website for £79.
