A GP has revealed the hidden health hazard that people need to look out for in their bathrooms. Bathrooms need to be cleaned regularly as steam and condensation can cause things like mould to grow, which can have negative effects on people’s health, especially those with weakened or compromised immune systems. Black mould isn’t uncommon in bathrooms, particularly ones that are poorly ventalated.
One GP, Dr Bhavini Shah from LloydsPharmacy Online, has pointed out exactly why we need to be extra vigilant when it comes to black mould in our bathrooms and the steps we can take to prevent it from growing. Adverse effects from black mould are commonly linked to people with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma and other respiratory issues. However, it can have effects on all of us and it is something we should all be looking out for, Dr Shah says.
“While black mould is often associated with worsening asthma and respiratory issues, it can also affect the skin and eyes – potentially triggering conditions like eczema or conjunctivitis,” she warned. “People with a weakened immune system are potentially more sensitive to mould.
“Symptoms include red eyes, runny nose, wheezing, and shortness of breath. In rare cases, mould allergies can lead to a more serious condition called allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Similar to asthma, symptoms include wheezing and coughing and typically occur in people with respiratory conditions such as cystic fibrosis.”
Black mould appears on walls and surfaces in damp or poorly ventilated rooms. While it can be removed once spotted, it is best to prevent it form developing in the first place.
Dr Shah says: “People should keep their home ventilated, and dry clothes outside and use extractor fans as this removes excess moisture and odours.”
“Open your windows several times a day; this includes during daily activities such as cooking or taking a shower to prevent black mould growing.”
A number of remedies work for getting rid of black mould from bathrooms and other areas of the home. HG Mould Spray has proven to be a lifesaver for many. Meanwhile, black mould remover is available in spray bottles in many supermarkets across the UK.
Many people also mix vinegar and water in spray bottles to get rid of black mold from their walls.
