While many foodies will already have a go-to way to make a classic American-style burger, Jamie Oliver says the “best” way includes one surprising element.
In a recipe shared on his website, the TV chef gives a step-by-step guide to making his spicy beef burger, including many ingredients that will be familiar to barbecue veterans like gerkins, American mustard and a sesame-topped brioche bun.
But in order to spice up the iconic dish, he introduces a slight twist – white vinegar. The condiment should be used to dress the red onion in a bowl, alongside a pinch of sea salt.
Jamie also suggests the “brilliant technique” of brushing the meat with mustard and adding a dash of Tabasco Chipotle sauce as it cooks, rather than after.
This builds up an “incredible gnarly layer of seasoning”, with the whole prep and cooking process taking just 35 minutes (plus time to let it chill).
He also suggests using higher-welfare minced chuck steak and streaky bacon, and Red Leicester cheese, to create a restaurant-level patty in your own home.

But if you’re looking for something a bit quicker and easier, the foodie and entrepreneur also has a recipe for smash burgers that takes just 15 minutes.
On his website, he said: “When only a burger will do, this smash-&-cook method will have you covered for a fast filthy fix.”
Smash burgers have soared in popularity in recent months, thanks in part to viral TikTok videos by cooking influencers.
It started off in American diners as a quick and efficient way to serve as many hungry customers as possible, but it’s become the latest massive fast food trend with new eateries centred on the classic style attracting swarms of punters, as per The Guardian.
The approach makes for thinner patties that crisp up beautifully on the outside, locking in the flavour.
Meanwhile, a burger expert from the Beefy Boys restaurant chain exclusively told Express.co.uk what the “simple most important part of your burger is”, offering top tips for cooking at home.
