'Unreal' thriller that keeps viewers in a 'constant state of terror' is now streaming

As we herald the arrival of 2025, Netflix UK subscribers can brace themselves for one of the most nerve-racking thrillers of the previous decade, now streaming without any additional cost.

With the festive period behind us and the annual marathon of Yuletide flicks concluded, cinema enthusiasts are scouring for top-tier streaming content to captivate them through these lengthy winter nights.

Your search ends with Netflix, as the streaming giant ushers in an extensive selection of fresh titles to kick-start the year.

Whether it’s Denzel Washington’s masterful performance in the heist caper Inside Man or Austin Butler’s Oscar-nominated portrayal of the King of Rock’n’Roll in 2022’s biographical epic Elvis, viewers are spoilt for choice for their next movie night indulgence.

Yet, those craving a surge of exhilaration will find their match in Don’t Breathe, hailed as one of the premiere thrillers of recent times, reports the Mirror.

Brought to life by director Fede Alvarez, known for injecting new energy into the Alien series with 2024’s Alien: Romulus, this 2016 sensation has amassed a fervent cult following.

It features Stephen Lang as a sight-impaired veteran whose home becomes the target of young burglars, only for the tables to turn drastically when he uncovers their scheme and unleashes his full defensive capabilities.

A horror aficionado on Letterboxd exclaimed: “Don’t Breathe does exactly what it sets out to do and that’s to f***ing terrify the audience, make you s*** your pants, make you cry, and/or make you crawl up into the foetal position.

“Chances are very high that you will experience at least one of those things if not more.”

“I cannot put into words how intense and brutal this movie is,” they continued, saying that it had at least two or three jump scares that “launched” them out of their seat.

Someone else said: “Impeccably made. There are at least a dozen sequences in this that are worth more than most of the horror movies I’ve ever seen.

“A creaky floorboard caused my heart to skip a beat, and then I was genuinely locked in a state of terror until the credits rolled. And this happens every time I watch it. Unreal.”

“Oh my god. For a movie called Don’t Breathe, I spent nearly the entire movie hyperventilating,” another fan confessed.

An impressed viewer also commented in their Google review: “I don’t want to spoil what it is exactly, but there’s a twist on that story that I’ve personally never seen before that’s there to change things up, which I appreciate.

“At this point in cinema history, seeing anything intriguing that you’ve NEVER seen before is kind of a big deal. So there’s that.”

Curious yet? Be sure to catch Don’t Breathe this weekend if you haven’t already.

And for those who are fans already, it’s high time to dive back into this modern masterpiece of suspense.

Don’t Breathe is available to stream on Netflix.
