As we approach the season of bugs and viruses, many individuals may find themselves battling a persistent cough. If you’re one of these people, pay attention, as ITV’s Dr Amir Khan has shared crucial health advice to assist you.
The well-known GP, who frequently shares health tips on television, recently uploaded a video on Instagram offering guidance for those suffering from a cough. He suggests that by paying close attention to your body and symptoms, you can identify what might be causing your discomfort.
He emphasised that not all coughs are identical, and there’s a particular warning sign to watch out for. This follows previous GP advice about what to do if you experience concerning cough symptoms.
According to Dr Amir, a dry, tickly cough without phlegm is typically caused by a viral infection such as a cold or flu. However, he noted that this could also be a symptom of asthma, acid reflux or certain blood pressure medications.
Conversely, if you have a chesty cough that results in expelling phlegm or mucus, it indicates your lungs are “trying to clear something.” Common causes include chest infections, bronchitis or chronic conditions like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
Dr Amir has issued a stark warning about nighttime coughs, stating: “A cough that’s usually worse at night can be a clue. Postnasal drip from allergies or sinuses make you cough when you lie down. Asthma can also flare up at night, and acid reflux is very likely when stomach acid sneaks up as you sleep.
“Number four, a persistent cough. Now, if your cough lasts for more than three weeks, it’s time to get it checked. Most often, it’s lingering after an infection, or due to asthma, but we also need to think about conditions like tuberculosis and, in rare cases, even lung cancer.
“And finally five, red flag coughs. If you’re coughing up blood, if you have a cough with unexplained weight loss, chest pain or breathlessness, then these are red flags and you need to see your doctor urgently.”
The video has since gone viral, racking up over 2,000 views, with many praising the advice given. One viewer expressed their gratitude, saying: “Thank you so much for recording Amir. As always, invaluable information and advice.”
Another queried: “Is there such a thing as a seasonal cough? I get one this time every year that lasts for ages. I’ve been to the GP, have been tested for asthma, but nothing.”
A third chimed in with: “Brilliant as ever. I always have a dry cough at bedtime, so annoying!” Meanwhile, a fourth shared: “Had my cough for over a year-and-a-half following numerous tests.
“Doctors can’t find anything, but it’s constant, especially at night! Now where does one go from here?” Another person added: “Very informative, as always.”
While coughs are common and usually resolve over time, if you’re worried about your cough or need additional advice, it’s best to consult your GP.
