If you’re looking for something to watch that you’ll still be thinking about days after seeing it – look no further than this film. Based on a book, this 2013 hit is known for its harrowing tale. One person on Rotten Tomatoes said: “This, for me, is the best movie I have ever watched in my life.”

Screen Rant says it’s one of the best war films to watch if you enjoyed the iconic Band of Brothers series. The Book Thief takes a different look at the war. The story follows the life of orphaned Liesel Meminger, who is relocated to Germany to live with foster parents.

Growing up through the war, in the heart of Nazi Germany, she begins to question what is right and wrong.

Another reviewer penned: “This was a beautiful film. I found the characters and action believable and compelling.

“So many films are so unrealistic – but this one really takes a viewer back to another world. I strongly recommend it.”

The historical drama, directed by Brian Percival, is based on Markus Zusak’s bestselling novel.

It stars Sophie Nélisse as Liesel, Geoffrey Rush as Hans, and Emily Watson as Rosa.

The film explores war, loss, and the power of words through a child’s eyes offering viewers a heartbreaking experience.

Another person who watched the film on Letterboxd said: “This was a great movie, it made me feel so many emotions, I would recommend this, especially if you’re into WWII movies and themes.”

Zusak’s book was released in 2005 and it quickly gained critical acclaim for its unique narrative style and emotional depth.

The novel emerged as a standout in young adult historical fiction during a time when interest in WWII literature was resurging.

You can watch The Book Thief on Disney Plus or on Amazon Prime Video.
