‘Suspenseful’ western starring Game of Thrones actor leaves viewers ‘glued to the TV’

When it was first released in 2016 this western-style TV show hit Netflix and fans looking for a thrill could not get enough of their favourite Game Of Thrones star playing a hardcore outlaw.

Frontier is a historical drama starring Jason Momoa in the 18th century, chronicling the North American fur trade. The actor plays Declan Harp throughout the series, a half-Irish, half-Cree man campaigning to fight against the monopoly on the fur trade in his native land.

The Hudson’s Bay Company acts as the ruthless villain in this story, as the plot centres on its violent tactics in order to control the trade in North America. Set in colonial Canada, Harp finds himself uncovering the corruptions of the fast-growing trade and the illegal activities it partakes in to continue to make money.

Viewers have taken to Rotten Tomatoes to share their excitement about the show. One review reads: “Absolutely glued to the TV, my parents are also now addicted after I recommended it to them… What’s not to like! If I could give more than 5 stars, I would!”

Another viewer shared: “Godless – Instant Western Classic masterpiece, stylish, intriguing, violent and beautiful, all at the same time…” While someone else dubbed the series as “equal to or greater than Breaking Bad or Stranger Things in its own uniqueness”.

As fans watch Momoa take on the lead role, he is also joined on screen by a cast made up of Greg Bryk, Kyle M. Hamilton, Alun Armstrong and Zoe Boyle. His arched nemesis in the show is Lord Benton, played by Armstrong, a member of the Hudson’s Bay Company, with a reputation for his tyrannical tactics.

The characterisation in this series has been praised by many viewers, as one fan says: “It seems more realistic to the actual frontier survival living. The sense of what one had to do to survive is pretty incredible, but you have to watch closely. In the set. In the script. In the changes of how character to character they act differently.”

A five star review added: “Surprisingly good. I was impressed. Great acting. Great directing. The “writing” can be a touch over the top, far fetched and hard to believe – but, besides that – it’s fun to watch.”

Others have less positive things to say about the TV series. As one disappointed viewer wrote: “The worst set of English, Scottish and other accents I’ve ever heard. The slowest moving storyline, some truly awful lines delivered by very poor actors.”

These opinions could be what led the series to be cancelled after three seasons, with the last one launching on the streaming platform in 2018.

The show was officially cancelled a year later in 2019, as a star of the show, Jessica Matten, revealed the news to fans.

If you’re desperate to see Jason Momoa take on an entirely different character to his famed Game of Thrones role or as the much-loved Aquaman, Frontier offers just that. All three of the six-episode seasons are available to exclusively stream on Netflix now.
