Three easy plants to grow indoors to create a green oasis

If you want to have a thriving green space, but don’t have a garden to tend to, don’t fret. If all you have is a small balcony, you can still enjoy a lush garden as many plants grow well in small spaces.

According to YouGov research, over 30 percent of UK households live in flats, and many of them (seven in 10 people) grow plants in containers, window boxes, or on their balconies – but there are a few plants that cope better in small spaces than others. Helping people to create gorgeous greenery in small spaces is David Gray, a home improvement expert from Corston Architectural Detail.

Mr Gray recommends growing herbs like basil, mint and thyme, which are perfect for sunny window ledges; they are also compact and fast-growing plants. Even better, they’re great for home cooking and can add flavour to drinks and meals.

Three of the easiest plants to grow indoors

  1. Basil
  2. Mint
  3. Thyme

You can also grow chillies; dwarf or patio varieties thrive in well-drained pots and love south-facing spaces. Meanwhile, fruits are another option; strawberries grow well in hanging baskets and tolerate partial sun.

And veggies, such as leafy greens – like spinach and lettuce – tolerate cooler temperatures and shallow soil.

Finally, if you want to attract wildlife, such as bees and butterflies, to a small outdoor space, you can try planting lavender and marigolds. These hardy plants add scent and colour to help attract pollinators.

To make the most of your smaller space, Mr Gray recommended adding trellises and shelves to have greenery spreading up rather than out.

You can also choose dual purpose furniture, such as fold-out tables or benches that double as storage to keep your space clean and functional.

To ensure that your plants are getting what they need, group them together. Sun-loving plants on the railing, and shadier plants lower and closer to the door.

Creating your own urban oasis does not need to be expensive either. Repurpose old crates or even tin cans as pots, and use mirrors or light-coloured surfaces to bounce light around shaded corners.
