Police have arrested multiple protesters in Westminster after supporters of the newly proscribed group Palestine Action gathered in Parliament Square. A post on X by the Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were responding to the demonstration.
The force warned that “expressing support” for Palestine Action is now a criminal offence. Chants heard at the scene included: “Met Police you are puppets of the Zionist state.” Other protesters shouted: “British police off our streets,” and “leave them alone.” There were further chants of the controversial slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”.
At one point, a man yelled at officers: “Who do you protect? Who do you serve?”
Palestine Action was recently designated a terrorist organisation by the UK Government.
Veteran Green Party councillor Leslie Tate, 76, called the proscription “the creeping edge of totalitarianism.”
Police said further updates on arrests and the protest would be provided via social media.
