Netflix fans can't get enough of sci-fi 'instant classic' compared to The Matrix

Netflix fans are glued to the ‘hot mess’ sci-fi thriller deemed a mashup of The Matrix, Avengers, and The Bourne franchise.

Infinite presently ranks as one of the most-watched films among Netflix subscribers, sitting at ninth place in the UK movies chart.

The 2021 film Infinite faced delays in its theatrical release due to the Covid pandemic but eventually found its way to streaming services.

It initially premiered on Prime Video before making the leap to Netflix.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, famed for gripping action thrillers like Training Day and The Equalizer with Denzel Washington, Infinite adapts D. Eric Maikranz’s novel The Reincarnationist Papers.

Starring Mark Wahlberg as Evan, a man whose memories of past lives entangle him in a race to find a world-threatening device, the film delves into global pursuits and clandestine conflict, reports Surrey Live.

Despite Fuqua’s renowned track record, Infinite fell short of critical acclaim, scraping together a mere 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers remarking online: “This movie is a mix of The Bourne Identity, The Matrix, Avengers Infinity War rolled into one and it just one big hot mess.”

Some critics were scathing in their reviews, with one stating: “It doesn’t work at all! It’s a damn shame too because you would think a movie directed by the same person who directed Training Day and The Equalizer (both great movies) would be good but you’d be wrong.”

Others poked fun at the film, describing it as “the ‘If Michael Bay directed a Christopher Nolan film’ mashup we were all expecting.”

However, many fans have taken to Netflix to express their enthusiasm for the movie.

One supporter wrote: “I really enjoyed this film. Simply for the odd story. The wonderful cheesiness that kept it feeling a bridge above a B-rated nature. I felt it was an A-.”

Another fan added: “I’m glad I didn’t listen to the reviews! This is a solid movie. I think we are all just spoiled. This is original, with great settings and special effects. Fun weapons. Excellent premise. It’s not like any movie I’ve seen. If you like Kingsman movies, this should be up your alley. Not as funny, , a bit silly in places, lots of action.”

Someone else raved about the film, saying: “Awesome, suspenseful and edge of the seat entertainment. Has everything it needed to make it a instant classic. And leaves you wanting to see more. Great cast and a must see.”

Infinite is streaming on Netflix.
