61p cupboard item removes tea and coffee stains from carpets 'almost immediately'

If you’ve ever spilt tea or coffee on your carpet, you’ll know how tough those stains can be to remove.

But now, cleaning experts have shared a surprising tip for lifting these stubborn marks.

We Brits love our cuppas, but they can cause quite a mess on our carpets and clothes.

If you’re fed up with trying to scrub away tea stains from your carpet or rug without success, experts suggest using an unexpected cleaning product.

Forget about pricey carpet cleaners and homemade mixtures, it’s time to open a can of beer.

Yes, you heard right! If you don’t mind using some of your drink on your floor, you can clean your carpet with lager.

The cleaning gurus at The Rugs claim all you need to do is pour a small drop (emphasis on small, you can enjoy the rest later) onto the stain and gently rub it into the carpet with a cloth to “see almost immediate results”. For tougher stains, you might need to scrub a bit harder.

Once the stain has disappeared, rinse the carpet with water and pat it dry. Lager can be bought from most local supermarkets or off licences.

Skol Lager Beer Cans cost £2.45 from Asda which works out at 61p per can. Sainsbury’s Crown Lager costs £2.49 for four which works out at 62p per can.

Emre Eser, director of The Rugs, said: “When it comes to tackling your spills and stains, acting as quickly as possible is vital in helping you remove the stain with minimal hassle.”

He added that using household items and DIY hacks can help you deal with spillages straight away and keep your carpets looking good for longer.

If you can’t stand the thought of spilling beer or using it for cleaning, you try using salt. Experts suggest pouring a “generous” amount of table salt onto a fresh stain and leaving it for an hour to soak up the liquid.

The Rugs said in a statement sent to the Mirror: “Once the carpet dries, you can vacuum or sweep away the salt to reveal a clean, stain-free area.

“This hack works effectively on wet carpets with new spills. In fact, once your stain is dry, you will have to venture to other methods.”

Table salt can be bought from most local supermarkets and online. Ocado sells M&S table salt for 40p while Asda’s table salt costs 65p.

WD-40, which is often used as a lubricant or rust preventative, can also be used to remove stains from carpets. To use the solution, apply it to the stained area for 20-30 seconds before thoroughly washing the area with a damp sponge for a minute. Then, dry the area with a towel.
