4 paint colours to avoid that property expert claims makes homes look ‘cheap and outdated’

Painting is a fantastic way to give your home a spruce, however, there are certain colours to venture away from.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Mark Buskuhl, founder and CEO of Ninebird Properties has shared four paint colours to “avoid” in 2024 that can make a home “look cheap and outdated”.

1. Black

When it comes to paint colours, black can be a tricky one. While it may seem like a sophisticated and modern choice, too much black can make a home look “cheap and outdated”.

Mark claimed that this is “especially true” if used on larger surfaces such as walls or ceilings as it can create a dark and oppressive atmosphere that feels “unwelcoming” rather than luxurious.

To avoid this, try using black in smaller accents or as a trim colour instead.

Doing this will add a touch of drama and elegance without overpowering the space.

2. Bright primary colours

While bold and bright colours can be fun and playful, they can also “quickly become overwhelming and dated”.

Primary colours like red, blue, and yellow can create a childish and garish look if used in excess.

Instead, opt for softer and more muted shades of these colours or use them as accent colours rather than the main focus. This will create a “more sophisticated and timeless” look.

3. Neon or fluorescent colours

Similar to bright primary colours, neon and fluorescent hues can “quickly make a home look cheap and outdated”.

These intense colours are often associated with fast food chains and cheap plastic toys, giving off a “cheap and tacky vibe”.

Instead, choose more subtle shades of these colours or use them sparingly as accent colours to add a pop of brightness without overwhelming the space.

4. Trendy colours

While it can be tempting to jump on the latest colour trend, it’s important to consider how long that trend will last.

Choosing a trendy colour for your home may seem like a great idea now, but it could quickly become “outdated and make your home feel cheap”.

Instead, opt for more timeless colours that will stand the test of time and give your home a “classic and sophisticated” look.

For those who want to incorporate trendy colours, consider using them in smaller accents or decor pieces rather than on larger surfaces.
