Whilst drivers should still be honest to their insurance provider about how far they travel each year, covering shorter distances can help to cut the cost of cover significantly.
This is because drivers who spend less time behind the wheel are at a lower risk of getting into an accident than those covering much longer distances.
A number of car insurers also offer specialist policies for particularly low-mileage drivers. In many cases, these allow drivers to add miles to their account throughout the policy.
Zego also recommended that drivers add other motorists to their insurance policy, which can often help them to demonstrate to their insurance policy that they are related to other responsible road users.
They added: “Adding a seasoned driver helps balance the perceived risk. Just ensure the main driver is listed correctly to avoid ‘fronting,’ which is considered fraud and could invalidate your insurance.”
Nevertheless, motorists should make sure that any named drivers that they add to their policy also have a good track record, such as a strong no claims bonus (NCB), to prevent prices from rising.
Finally, the expert suggested that drivers are also particularly considerate about where they leave their car, stating that spaces offering more protection from thieves can help to lower prices.
They continued: “If you have a secure parking spot—whether it’s a garage or driveway—make sure your insurer knows. It reduces your risk, and that often translates to a cheaper policy.”
In particular, motorists should try to park their vehicle on a driveway located behind a locked gate or inside a garage to get the best possible discount on their insurance.
