10 'downright dangerous' used cars most likely to be in accidents – is yours one of them?

The vehicle history checking service carVertical has shared the top 10 cars that are most likely to be involved in collisions on the UK roads.

With the winter months typically being the most challenging for motorists, the company used accident record data to find which models were most damaged during 2023.

Matas Buzelis, car expert at carVertical warned motorists thinking about buying a used car that they should always check its history to avoid unknowingly paying for a car that had been involved in a serious accident.

He advised: “While reputable car dealers and many private sellers will only offer cars for sale that have been thoroughly repaired, there are still too many unscrupulous sellers out there who rely on drivers not doing their homework before parting with their money.

“Buying a vehicle without checking if it has been involved in an accident is an unnecessary risk that could cost unwary drivers tens of thousands of pounds.”

According to carVertical, the model that was most likely to be involved in accidents during 2023 was the Vauxhall Adam supermini, with 37 percent of those on the road featuring in accident damage records.

Volkswagens were also common, with the Beetle and Up! coming second and third respectively, and the popular Polo featuring in ninth place.

However, all top ten models were superminis and city cars, vehicles often popular with younger and more inexperienced motorists.

UK’s Most Damaged Cars in 2023

  1. Vauxhall Adam – 37%
  2. Volkswagen Beetle – 33.8%
  3. Volkswagen Up! – 32.3%
  4. Peugeot 208 – 30.8%
  5. Vauxhall Corsa – 30.6%
  6. Seat Ibiza – 29.9%
  7. Citroen C1 – 29%
  8. Ford Fiesta – 28.9%
  9. Volkswagen Polo – 28.2%
  10. Nissan Micra – 27.4%

Matas also warned that motorists who do not check if their vehicle has previously been in an accident could find their car is significantly more dangerous to drive.

He continued: “With many of the UK’s most popular and affordable cars, including the Ford Fiesta, appearing in 2023’s most damaged cars list, drivers should always look up a car’s history before agreeing to purchase it.

“Buying a car that has skeletons in its past can prove costly at best, and downright dangerous at worst.”
