Zara Tindall's cheeky quip at 'traitor' father over Olympics tensions unearthed

Zara, 42, and Mike Tindall, 45, were seen out and about during this year’s Cheltenham Festival. The couple were pictured kissing and embracing on the very last day of the races.

They attended every day of the festival, a tradition observed by many members of the Royal Family each year.

It is a sport close to the Firm, especially Zara, whose personal and professional life has revolved around horses as a professional equestrian.

Such is the intensity of her passion that she refused to pull any punches when previously talking about her father who coached Team USA during her appearance at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Zara, the daughter of Princess Anne, was not raised with a title and had the privilege of pursuing a relatively normal life while holding on to close ties to the royals.

She has in the past spoken at length about how Anne and her father, Mark Phillips, have fully supported her equestrian endeavours.

However, looking back at her Olympic Games stint during a 60-minute Australia interview in 2020, Zara hit out at her dad in a cheeky dig.

“My dad was there, but he was on the other side, he coaches the Americans,” she said. “He’s a traitor!”

Zara went on to win silver in the team event and was presented with the medal by her mother.

Anne was in her day a champion equestrian, in 1971 winning gold at the European Eventing Championships, and two silver medals at the 1976 games.

In competing at the Olympics, Anne became the first-ever member of the Royal Family to join the games, though she isn’t the only royal to enjoy a bit of sport.

Before their momentous fallout, William and Harry were known to share a love of playing polo together.

The pair were regularly pictured playing against each other in charity matches, the brothers known to be highly competitive.

Harry has taken his love for the sport stateside and regularly plays at the Montecito polo club, for which he is said to have “done wonders”.

Meanwhile, Zara and Mike were joined by Anne on the last day of the races as she arrived in a ruby red coat.

The Princess Royal, 73, stood out from the crowd with her Cossack-style hat splayed with a gold brooch as she walked into the grounds with Ian Renton.

Princess Beatrice, 35, and her husband Edo Mapelli Mozzi, 40, and Princess Eugenie, 33, and her husband Jack Brooksbank, 37, also made appearances at the festival.

Zara’s brother, Peter Phillips, 46, was also in attendance, as was Anne’s new lady-in-waiting Dolly Maude, 51.
