Zara and Mike Tindall are among the most popular royal couples, with the pair often not shy when it comes to packing on the PDA when out and about. While it is clear to royal fans that Princess Anne’s daughter is very much in love with Mike, her former rugby player husband, it is not just romance at the heart of their relationship.

This was made clear when Mike, 46, revealed how Zara, 43, once arranged for him to be woken up in a brutal way when staying at one of the Royal Family’s residences in London. Mike recalled the story while speaking at a DEBRA fundraiser organised to aid those living with epidermolysis bullosa (EB). He said the prank happened when he had been staying at the St James’ Palace flat belonging to Princess Anne after going out with his friend in London.

Despite being set to do a coaching clinic at 8.30am the next day, Mike did not return home to the royal apartment until 4am, resulting in him oversleeping.

Talking about what happened that morning, Mike said: “I was meant to be there (the coaching clinic) in 45 minutes. My friend rings up Zara, who phoned the police post at the palace.

“They started giggling, saying they saw me at 4am on video cameras struggling to get to the doorway. She says, ‘I don’t care what you do. He needs to be in North London in 35 minutes.’

“Next thing, five guys in full riot gear with machine guns come in saying, ‘Get up, get up’. I was, like, ‘F***!’. And in three minutes, I was in the back of a cab, with the police waving me off.”

While this may have been a brutal prank organised by Zara, it seems this humorous approach isn’t just one-sided.

This comes after Mike revealed just weeks ago a prank he plays on his wife and three children. He made the rare comment about his family as he guest-edited a special edition of Beano.

He wrote: “My job now is being a dad and I love it. It’s important to set a good example, so I play pranks on the kids and their mum.

“I love hiding and jumping out to scare them. It works best on mum – she screams SO loudly! The kids’ favourite prank is to hide under the table and tie people’s shoelaces together!”
