A food influencer has shared the ‘best’ way to peel and chop ginger that will take seconds.

Chef Devaux, better known under his username ‘MakeSushi1,’ has over 450,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram, where he shows viewers the best ways to make sushi as well as other dishes. He also often shares his favourite cooking hacks.

One popular accompaniment to sushi, along with soy sauce and wasabi, is ginger. Ginger is often used in asian cuisine to add a unique kick to your food without taking over the flavour.

But most home cooks will know that preparing fresh ginger can be a difficult task. Luckily, chef Devaux has shared the best technique to chop and grate ginger, and it’ll take seconds to do.

“The best way to peel ginger is with a spoon,” he said in a TikTok video.

He then demonstrated how he used a teaspoon to carefully carve the peel off the fresh ginger. Doing this allows chefs to get into each crevice more easily and peel off more of the peel without removing any of the ginger inside.

He then went on to explain how to best chop up ginger without using a grater. All you need is an object to smash it with.

“Cut it thin, add some cling film over it and smash it. It instantly pulvarises into grated ginger,” he explained, showing how he used the blade of a knife to smash the ginger.

People soon took to the comments section of the video to share their thoughts on the hack.

One person wrote: “Wow! I had no idea that there’s such an easy way to handle ginger!”

“OMGosh this is a game changer. I could never get it chilopped enough. Minced is better cause there more surface to flavor the food,” another person wrote, while a third user said: “what, how did I not know this.”

However, others were not so convinced. One person wrote: “lol i can NEVER peel it with the spoon successfully,” one viewer commented, while another said: “We keep it in the freezer and just grate it without peeling it first.”
