If you’re flying the Android flag by keeping a Google Pixel phone in your pocket, your device might be about to look a little out of date. According to new reports, Google is readying its next batch of smartphones for launch to replace the Pixel 9 series that launched last August.
The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold broke Google’s streak of announcing phones in October, and the tech giant is rumoured to be keeping to its new schedule for 2025.
According to Android Headlines, Google is set to announce the Pixel 10 phones at a Made by Google event on Wednesday August 20. That’s almost a year to the day the Pixel 9 was announced on August 22, 2024, a date which at the time was thought to be set to get ahead of Apple’s annual September iPhone unveiling.
The publication had previously said the event would be held on August 13, but it now claims Google has delayed it by a week.
The report claims the event will see the launch of the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, direct replacements for last year’s models. The below alleged render of a Pixel 10 model looks exactly like the Pixel 9 Pro, suggesting an iterative year of design updates.
Google is also rumoured to be adding a third camera lens to the regular Pixel for the first time. If the handset gains a telephoto lens, it’ll be interesting to see how Google prices it and differentiates it from the Pro models. The telephoto lens has been a reason for buyers to upgrade to the Pro Pixels since the Pixel 6 series in 2021.
Android Authority has said it believes Google might get around this by using the same main and ultra-wide cameras in the Pixel 9a in the Pixel 10, which are cameras not considered to be as good as the Pixel 9.
The new phones are said to feature Google’s new Tensor G5 chipset, which the firm opts to produce itself rather than use the Snapdragon chips on offer from Qualcomm that can be found in Samsung Galaxy phones and devices from other Android firms such as OnePlus, Honor and Xiaomi.
Android Headlines said the Pixel Watch 4 will also be announced at the August 20 event, with pre-orders for all devices going live that day, with a release date set for August 28.
As the Pixel 10 name suggests, this is Google’s tenth Pixel series release since the original Pixel and Pixel XL in 2016. Despite the annual turnover, sales have remained far, far lower than Samsung and Apple, and Google only sells the Pixel phones in select global markets.
