Your next Android phone could get a serious Wi-Fi upgrade and that's not all

Your next Android phone could feature some seriously speedy new tech inside that will make streaming smoother and downloading games and movies a whole lot faster. US technology giant Qualcomm has just announced two new upgrades at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona that could come packed inside upcoming smartphones. The first change is the launch of the new Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System which will boost data connections when out on the road.

5G continues to roll out across the UK and this upgrade should improve things when trying to connect to this better signal.

Qualcomm says this new technology features “revolutionary AI innovations” that will improve data speeds, latency, quality of service (QoS), coverage, location accuracy, spectrum efficiency, power efficiency and multi-antenna management.

Basically, it should mean your 5G signal is more reliable, faster and will suck less power from the battery.

Qualcomm is also boasting that the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System is the first 5G modem with fully integrated NB-NTN satellite communications support. That could mean Android phones are finally able to match Apple’s latest iPhones and send texts into space.

“The Snapdragon X80 modem-RF system sets the stage for 5G Advanced and the era of intelligent computing everywhere,” said Durga Malladi, senior vice president and general manager, technology planning and edge solutions, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

“Leveraging AI is critical to the future of connectivity, this latest milestone underscores Qualcomm Technologies’ leadership at the intersection of cutting-edge AI and advanced modem-RF technology. The Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System empowers OEMs and operators to create next-generation devices supporting 5G Advanced, with unrivaled capabilities and leading performance.”

So that’s 5G but what about when you’re using your device at home?

Qualcomm reckons it also has this covered thanks to an upgrade called the FastConnect 7900. This technology will bring improved Wi-Fi 7 compatibility to smartphones. For those not aware, Wi-Fi 7 is the next generation of connectivity that is coming to homes in the coming months. EE has just announced its first Wi-Fi 7 router will launch soon but those wanting to make the most of this better broadband platform will also need compatible devices.

That’s where Qualcomm comes in with the FastConnect 7900 offering exactly that. This platform also integrates Bluetooth Channel Sounding to create a powerful suite of proximity technologies that enable security-rich device discovery, access, and control.

“FastConnect 7900 is a technological feat, leveraging AI to raise the bar and deliver leading Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth capabilities while integrating Ultra Wideband all on a single 6nm chip,” said Javier del Prado, vice president and general manager for mobile connectivity, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

“Building on the legacy of our first-gen Wi-Fi 7 offering found in millions of devices today, FastConnect 7900 creates a new way to connect. The system brings next-level capabilities across AI, proximity, and multi-device experiences into the devices we love most.”

Expect more news on devices getting this technology during the second part of the year.
