Your Fitbit gets downgraded – Google confirms ‘disruptive’ shutdown within weeks

If you own certain Fitbit models, you are about to see a clever feature “stop working” in the coming weeks. Google, which has owned the Fitbit brand since 2021, says it is about to start phasing out its smart voice assistant on popular devices, including the Fitbit Sense and Versa devices.

This update first arrived back in 2020 and has allowed users to ask questions, set timers and start workouts using just their voice.

Sadly, if that’s something you have been enjoying, its days are numbered.

“We want to share an update regarding Google Assistant on Fitbit Smartwatches,” Google explained.

“Over the next few weeks we will be progressively phasing out Google Assistant on your Fitbit device. You can learn more about this process here. This change means that Google Assistant voice control for activities will soon no longer be available on your Fitbit device.

“We understand that changes can be disruptive, and we value your feedback. We remain committed to continuously improving your Fitbit app and developing exciting new features.”

Some users are already seeing a message pop up on their displays that says, “Google Assistant on Fitbit watches is being turned down, this feature will stop working in the coming weeks.”

Some reports suggest that this irritating error will continue to be shown until the Assistant system is turned off completely.

The changes are taking place due to Google moving away from this older smart technology and moving people over to its more advanced Gemini assistant instead. For those not in the know, Gemimi is not only able to help with more queries but can also do it in a more conversational way.

Google says anyone with a Versa or Sense watch can still use Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant instead, but this will have to be switched on in the settings.

Here’s how to turn on Alexa

• From the Today tab in the Fitbit app, tap your profile picture your device image.

• Tap Voice Assistant Amazon Alexa Sign in with Amazon.

• Tap Get Started.

• Create or log in to your Amazon account.

• Tap Close to return to the Voice Assistant tile.
