If, like many, you worry about the eventualities you might come across on holiday, being limited to a weekend staycation can feel even more challenging. What if you need a nice pair of shoes for an evening dinner at a restaurant? What if it suddenly rains? Will there be a chance of hitting the beach?
Travel expert Richard Edwards, Owner of White House Hideaway, has revealed the simple luggage packing hack that can simplify the experience. In fact, there’s one packing no-no that “many people” tend to get “wrong” when they’re going away for a long weekend. “They pick a large bag thinking they need the space, then feel compelled to fill it,” warns Edwards.
Instead, it’s much better to start off with a smaller weekend bag or a cabin-sized suitcase for a short trip away.
The physical constraint forces you to be more selective about what you bring with you.
However, there are other top tips to help make the whole process smoother, starting with a capsule wardrobe.
A capsule wardrobe can consist of a comfortable pair of jeans, two tops and a light jacket to create multiple ensembles.
To keep the look cohesive, it’s advisable to pick a colour palette of two to three shades.
“Think about what you’ll actually be doing, not what you might do,” advises Edwards.
And it’s worth checking the weather forecast and reviewing which activities you have planned.
“Also check your accommodation’s amenities—many staycation spots provide basics like toiletries, towels, and hairdryers, so you don’t need to pack them,” says Edwards.
Another top tip is to roll the clothes you’re packing away in your weekend bag to help maximise the space.
“Rolling can easily save you 30% of your packing space,” says Edwards. “Plus, everything stays more organised when you can see each item clearly.”
It’s also recommended to avoid the “just in case” mentality when packing by limiting how much you pack to just one week (even if you’re only going away for two nights).
